Compared to your story ours is so minor but maybe we can help in some way. My husband lost both legs in a construction accident 11 yrs. ago. He was also treated at Harborview and his prothetist is near there. The right prothetist can make a huge difference and you will be working with them the rest of your life so be sure to choose one you can relate to and are comfortable with.
My husband refused to let this setback stop him from living. He went back to work (same job) within 2 months, built a barn, etc. One leg is a below knee amp. so he calls that his good leg. Every morning he puts on his legs and goes about his day. He is a true inspiration to me & others.
We are familiar with some of the things you will be going through regarding prothetics, physical therapy, etc.
If we can be of any help please let us know. We live 30 minutes from Enumclaw.
vicki@rocknhorsedesigns.comAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09502937787910702299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117390754261970565.post-3280727245960622692008-09-19T11:16:00.000-07:002008-09-19T11:16:00.000-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09502937787910702299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117390754261970565.post-74195671417029214172008-09-19T10:43:00.000-07:002008-09-19T10:43:00.000-07:00my thoughts are with you and your family.my thoughts are with you and your family.Hollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14167156568343112162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117390754261970565.post-55256212307164675562008-09-19T08:56:00.000-07:002008-09-19T08:56:00.000-07:00Scott and Carol - I count Carol's dad Jim as one o...Scott and Carol - I count Carol's dad Jim as one of the most wonderful people I have ever met and now I count you both as my personal superheroes! I too want to add my thoughts and well-wishes.

I have experienced something similar, not the medical cause, but the experience of having a medical emergency approximately 7 years ago that changed our family's life. My mother had a car accident where she was ejected from the vehicle and she sustained multiple injuries including brain damage. We, like you, went through the seemingly never-ending cycle of being in the ICU, sleeping in hospital lobbies, rushed surgeries in the middle of the night, ventilators, loss of muscle mass, PT, OT, swallow studies...etc. All told, my mother was in the hospital for just over 3 months, and then in outpatient therapy for another 6-7 months. I stayed with her every day she was there. We were lucky as she survived with most everything intact with the exception of some residual brain damage and memory loss.

I'm not trying to tell my own sob story or to compare notes. I'm telling this just to let you know that you are not alone. I can remember lying on that cot in her room thinking, ok let's get through tomorrow, let's get through this next surgery. That carried over to let's get her sitting upright, let's get her to talking, etc... We just set little goals and kept focusing on the future. Before we knew it, it was a year after the accident. It changed all of us; something like can't not change people. But it made us appreciate each other so much more than we ever did, and helped us to remember to slow down and enjoy every moment of life.

Your wife sounds like an amazingly strong woman. I know she will get through this and before you all know it, you will be looking at it a year later and be proud, happy, and relieved that you made it through together.

Regards,
Mandy, Greenville SCMandyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13357158115841874785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117390754261970565.post-40383906114302003892008-09-18T12:57:00.000-07:002008-09-18T12:57:00.000-07:00Scott and Carol,What a time you have both been thr...Scott and Carol,
What a time you have both been through. God bless you both. I read your entire blog today and when I was explaining to my children what had happened to your family, they asked that we stop right there and say a prayer for you. We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this journey. We may not know why these things happen sometimes, but God knows the plans that he has for both of you... and your adorable daughters. Your love for each other is amazing. I read your story from start to finish today and I am in tears! I am so sorry for what you have gone through. I dont know why things happen and I dont think we will ever know. But I know that things happen for a reason. You have 2 beautiful daughters that are so lucky to have a family that loves them so much. Carol is also lucky to have a husband to take such good care of her and your children during this time. Most husbands would not have a clue as what to do with a newborn. Miracles happen and Im praying that you will continue to have miracles happen through your recovery. I dont think that I will be able to stop thinking of you and your situation. It hit close to home.
